could there be a small crack in one of the heads were as you wont notice smoke or any dampness. how much water are you losing?

If I drive long distances of 50 miles, I would have to add about a half gallon. But I did notice today a slight amount of white smoke coming from the exhaust.

go to the store and get a cheap coolant pressure tester kit. that should help big time. if you pump the pressure it will leak somewhere. if you dont visually see anything leaking pull all the plugs and see if its going into one of the cylinders.
